Alison Johnson, B.A., M.S., graduated from Carleton College summa cum laude and studied mathematics at the Sorbonne on a National Science Foundation Fellowship. She received an M.S. degree in mathematics at the University of Wisconsin on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship. In 2010 she received a Distinguished Achievement Award from Carleton College.

Like Wallace Stevens, Johnson has maintained wide-ranging professional interests and has found such variety a stimulus to her creative work. In addition to her biography on Wallace Stevens, she has published a family memoir that is endorsed by Warren Buffett and a biography titled Henry James: His Life Revealed in His Letters, which is the only biography of James sold in his home in Rye, England. She has also produced and directed documentaries titled Multiple Chemical Sensitivity: How Chemical Exposures May Be Affecting Your Health; Gulf War Syndrome: Aftermath of a Toxic Battlefield; and The Toxic Clouds of 9/11: A Looming Health Disaster. Her books on the subject of chemical sensitivity include Casualties of Progress: Personal Histories from the Chemically Sensitive; Gulf War Syndrome: Legacy of a Perfect War; and Amputated Lives: Coping with Chemical Sensitivity. Johnson chairs the Chemical Sensitivity Foundation. She lives in midcoast Maine.
