Sybil Gage was a beautiful, highly intelligent, and charming young woman with whom Wallace Stevens had a brief romantic encounter when he was twenty-one, an encounter that he fondly remembered for the rest of his life. In Chapter 4 and Chapter 9 of my biography, I present tantalizing evidence that as his marriage to Elsie Moll was deteriorating, Wallace Stevens may have established Sybil in the role of his secret muse.

John K. Howat, who provided the photo of Sybil, sent me this comment:

"I have read your Wallace Stevens biography. Well done. The Sybil Gage parts all ring true."
